Emergency Relief Counter

Emergency relief counter is an initiative from Budhbarer Haat presented by Sharadi Foundation to support the families affected by the corona pandemic and long term lockdown across the country.

Reasons for organising this initiative

An outbreak of Covid-19 has deeper implications apart from health consequences in our society. It affects both the physical and mental health of people. On a global scale, such a pandemic has severely disrupted economic and social balance.

Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown have disorganised the daily livelihood of many people and resulted in joblessness in different sectors due to economic slowdown, disruption in the supply chain and impoverishment of the working class. Social distancing and closure of restaurants, hotels, restrictions in travelling due to combined effects of pandemic and lockdown created a disturbance in the medical and food supply chain. Besides, Covid issues have created a sense of helplessness and stigma among the people in isolation.

In the context of West Bengal

Corona pandemic has increased socio-economic inequality across the states especially for the lockdown phenomenon. In West Bengal, the disruption in livelihood is mostly seen in urban areas so far. Some people worked in different states before the pandemic and are unemployed at present. Due to restrictions in social mobility, new job finding is quite difficult for them. Maintaining daily life has become very challenging for People belonging to lower-income strata. As a result, already visible inequality in our society has been intensified.

Our initiatives

Sharadi Foundation always stands against inequality and hence, stands by the people suffering from these difficulties. Foundation has started an emergency relief camp for the currently jobless people and covid affected families every week on Wednesday. The camp is organised in the Bally area of Howrah at present with the existing capacity of the foundation. Later, the area of coverage will expand with time.

Four essential grocery items among soybean, sugar, pulses, puffed rice, spices, oil etc are alternatively provided to the families every week at Rs 10. Foundation does not want to dishonour the self-esteem of any person by donating these items. Therefore, essentials grocery items are provided at Rs 10 only. However, Foundation provides all these things free of cost to a person, who does not afford to pay that amount.

Sharadi Foundation always has and will stand for people in need. We believe that together we can make a difference.
